Food Writing Intensive

The Ace Hotel New York
20 w. 29th st, New York, NY 10001

Saturday, January 18th &
Sunday, January 19th
10:00 AM – 4:00 PM

"As a full-time staffer at Food52, I was in a position where I had a small degree of power to fix the broken machine that is food media… For me, this resulted in writing about my own relationship to food as someone who exists at the nexus of a few marginalized identities (I’m a queer person of color, if you haven’t heard me scream about it constantly), and the stories of women of color who I felt were overlooked in some gravely unfair way, from Princess Pamela to Irene Kuo. These were stories I gravitated towards: stories of outsiders who carved a space for themselves within a suffocatingly white industry."
–– Mayukh Sen, James Beard Foundation: “How to Make Food Media More Equitable for Writers of Color”

Kundiman is excited to announce our next Food Writing Intensive, taught by Mayukh Sen! Mayukh Sen has written for New York Times, Washington Post, and New Yorker Web and is the winner of a James Beard Award for his essay, “She Was a Soul Food Sensation. Then, 19 Years Ago, She Disappeared.”

In this two-day workshop, we will talk about translating taste onto the page, the politics of food media, and how to think about food thoughtfully and critically. Students will discuss existing food writing and generate their own work. There will be a particular emphasis on how to craft personal narratives on food with journalistic rigor.

The Food Writing Intensive will be limited to 15 participants and will be held at The Ace Hotel New York. There is a scholarship spot available.

Registration for this class is now closed.

Testimonials from Previous Participants

of the kundiman food writing intensive:

“The best workshops can introduce you to new ways of writing while drawing on and strengthening what you already know. The Kundiman Food Writing Intensive does that, with fantastic exercises, a brilliant teacher, and an enthusiastic, supportive camaraderie. An essential workshop for any writer looking to expand their toolbox and learn more about how to write beautifully about food.”
–– James Fujinami Moore

“The community surrounding Kundiman is one of the most thoughtful and incisive that I've been a part of, and the food writing intensive with Ligaya Mishan was no different. It was a refreshing space to filter out the noise and approach the subject of food with the kind of intellectual lucidity that pushes the culture forward.” –– Jarret Leong

“The Food Writing Intensive was both a writing workshop and an intriguing discussion about how race, politics, etc are relevant to the food world. Days after, I was still thinking about the conversations that arose throughout the day.” –– Stephen Glauser
