Publishing Panel: A Guide for Writers on the Road to Publication

Kundiman and Penguin Random House are hosting a free virtual publishing panel featuring agents and editors from book and literary magazine publishing: Neela Banerjee (Managing Editor at Kaya Press), Marie Pantojan (Executive Editor at Random House), Anjali Singh (Founder and Agent at the Anjali Singh Agency), and Mimi Wong (Board Member and former Editor-in-Chief at The Offing).

This panel will help emerging writers navigate how to approach publication. Panelists will discuss getting started with publishing in literary journals and magazines, and how to work towards querying agents and working with editors. Neelanjana Banerjee is the Managing Editor of Kaya Press, where she recently launched a South Asian diasporic imprint called Kulhar books. She teaches Asian American literature, Creative Writing and Publishing at UCLA, Loyola Marymount University and USC in Los Angeles. Her writing has appeared widely in places like World Literature Today, Harper's Bazaar, the Texas Observer and Alta Journal.

Marie Pantojan is an Executive Editor at Random House, where she publishes both nonfiction and literary fiction. She has published New York Times and national bestsellers, as well as winners/finalists for the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Award, the Mark Lynton History Prize, the Center for Fiction First Novel Prize, the National Book Critics Circle Award, the Carol Shields Prize for Fiction, and many others. In nonfiction, she has recent or forthcoming books with Rebecca Donner, Dr. Joy Buolamwini, Nicole Eustace, Malcolm Harris, and Cristina Rivera Garza; in fiction, her authors include Daphne Palasi Andreades, Nicole Dennis-Benn, Nicky Gonzalez, and Larissa Pham. She was a 2023 PW Star Watch honoree, and is a longtime mentor with the Representation Matters Program.

Anjali Singh has been a literary agent since 2015 and founded her own agency in 2024. In her 30 years in publishing, she has worked as an international literary scout, an acquiring editor at Vintage Books (where she acquired books by Marjane Satrapi and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie), Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, Simon + Schuster and as Editorial Director of Other Press. Her current client list includes susan abulhawa, Zara Chowdhary, Tessa Hulls, Saleem Haddad, Padma Viswanathan, Sangamithra Iyer and Nawaaz Ahmed. She has always been drawn to the thrill of discovering new writers, but also lately, has found joy in helping to relaunch writers mid-career. She focuses on literary fiction, memoir, and narrative nonfiction, and well as graphic novels for all ages.

Mimi Wong is a writer, editor, and educator. Her fiction and nonfiction have been published in Joyland, The Believer, Electric Literature, The Margins, and was anthologized in Best! Letters from Asian Americans in the Arts (Paper Monument/n+1, 2021). For her work engaging with Asian diasporic art and culture, she was awarded the Andy Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant. Passionate about building a more inclusive literary community, she was previously Editor in Chief of The Offing, which won a Whiting Literary Magazine Prize, and continues to serve as a board member. She has taught literature at Barnard College and currently teaches writing at The New School. She lives in New York.
